Accordion and the red door in Weimar, Germany

Mihail Cunetchi (born 1996, Republic of Moldova) discovered his passion for music as a child, growing up in a family where everyone played music. After his early education in Dubăsari, he studied accordion at the renowned Ciprian Porumbescu Music High School in Chișinău, winning prizes at national and international competitions as a young musician. In 2018, he moved to Germany, where he studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Weimar under Professor Claudia Buder.

He has received important inspiration from Markus Stockhausen, Hugo Noth, Veli Kujala, Luka Juhart, and Uroš Rojko, among others. Numerous awards mark his career, including first prize at the accordion competition in Belgium (2023), second prize at the Klingenthal International Accordion Competition, the DAAD Prize for his international artistic commitment, and a scholarship at Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now.

In addition to his solo activities, Mihail Cunetchi initiates innovative projects: in 2021 he founded the experimental jazz trio gavgav, and in 2022 the duo AssaiMovere with violinist Asiia Garipova.

As a soloist, he has performed with the Theater Erfurt, the Theater Altenburg-Gera, and the German National Theater Weimar, among others, and performed the world premiere of Loris Douyez's accordion concerto "Oppression" with the Arts² Orchestra in Belgium. He also collaborates on projects with the EFIM Ensemble Weimar, where he focuses on contemporary music.

Parallel to his artistic career, he was involved in teaching at music schools in Thuringia from 2019 to 2025. After eight formative years in Weimar, he completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in 2025, having matured into one of the most versatile and active accordionists of his generation.
